Skirts For Body Shapes

Understanding your body shape is the first step to buying skirts that enhance your natural body lines.

Here’s a detailed explanation of the four main body shapes: Rectangle, Triangle, Hourglass, and Inverted triangle.

Each body shape has unique characteristics and can look fabulous with the right styling technique within my Boss science system.

Rectangle Body Shape

Characteristics:

  • Shoulders, Waist, and Hips: Roughly the same width, creating a straight up-and-down silhouette.

  • Waist: Not very defined.

Styling Tips:

  • Skirts: Straight or slightly tapered skirts that follow the flow of the natural leg line are great choices. High-waisted skirts that highlight hips and the illusion of a waist work well on rectangle body shapes along with details hanging around or near the waist to help create an hourglass effect. This can be achieved with a bow, a tied fabric sash, or a row of simple buttons.

 

Triangle Body Shape

Characteristics:

  • Shoulders and Bust: Narrower compared to hips.

  • Waist: Well-defined.

  • Hips and Thighs: Wider than shoulders and bust, creating a bottom-heavy appearance.

Styling Tips:

  • Skirts: Triangles are the only body shape that suits an A-line skirt as it follows their natural body line. They also look great in straight skirts with splits and skirts with belts or bands around the waist to help create an hourglass effect.

Inverted Triangle Body Shape

Characteristics:

  • Shoulders and Bust: Broader compared to hips.

  • Waist: Often not as defined.

  • Hips and Thighs: Narrower than shoulders and bust.

Styling Tips:

  • Skirts: Skirts with a strong taper like pencil skirts suit the inverted triangle body shape as their leg line tapers in quite dramatically. Wrap skirts will also give waist definition and add feminine curve to what feels like a more masculine body shape. Folds and soft fabrics balance the inverted triangle body shape.
     

Hourglass Body Shape

Characteristics:

  • Shoulders and Hips: Approximately the same width.

  • Waist: Well-defined, creating a balanced and curvy silhouette.

  • Bust and Hips: Proportionate.

Styling Tips:

  • Skirts: Tulip skirts, pencil skirts and body con skirts that cinch at the waist or come with a belt are an hourglasses best friend. You will find that a side, front or back split is a must to allow your curves freedom of movement.
