Styling Long Boots

Long boots love to be seen.

They work best with skirts and dresses that allow the full shape of the boot to show, rather than hiding most of it underneath fabric.

This is why they pair beautifully with skirts that have a wider split, where the boot reveals itself naturally as you move.

A darker skirt loves the contrast of a lighter or a tan long boot, while a lighter skirt is beautifully grounded by a darker or a tan boot.

And this is exactly why tan continues to be one of the hardest-working colours in a wardrobe as it moves easily between light and dark outfits.

You can absolutely wear your long boots over skinny jeans or slim pants; in fact, this is one of the easiest ways to create a long, streamlined winter silhouette.

Now that we have no loose fabric overlap, the key is to keep the depth of colour through the leg line consistent.

A light pair of slim pants works best with a lighter long boot and a medium or coloured pair of pants pairs beautifully with a medium tan boot.

Dark denim skinny jeans or dark pants are best balanced with a darker long boot.

This keeps the leg line flowing uninterrupted from hip to toe.

When the depth changes too dramatically between the pants and the long boots, the eye stops at the break, which will cut the leg line in half.

But when the colours sit in harmony with each other, everything feels longer and cleaner (and not to mention classier).

So before purchasing long boots, have a look at the skinny jeans and slim pants already sitting in your wardrobe. What colour depth do you wear the most?

Because the best long boots aren’t necessarily the trendiest pair… they’re the pair that work hardest with what you already own.
