When is a Gilet Actually a Longline Vest

What is the difference between a gilet (pronounced gil-lay)and a long-line vest and how should you style it in Autumn?

Let me break it down for you.

A gilet and a long vest are similar garments but with some key differences in their design and functionality:

  1. Length: The main difference lies in their length. A gilet is typically shorter, often ending at the waist or hip, similar to a sleeveless jacket. On the other hand, a long vest extends further down, usually reaching below the hip or even to the mid-thigh, resembling a longer outerwear piece.

  2. Design: Gilets are often designed with a sportier or outdoorsy look, featuring quilted or padded materials, and may include features like pockets and a front zipper. Long vests, on the other hand, can vary widely in design, ranging from casual to more formal styles. They may have lapels, buttons, or even belts for closure.

  3. Functionality: Gilets are commonly used as an extra layer for warmth, especially in outdoor activities or sports. They provide insulation while leaving the arms free for movement. Long vests, on the other hand, can serve both functional and fashion purposes. They can be worn as part of a layered outfit for added warmth or as a stylish outerwear piece to complement an ensemble.

  4. Versatility: Long vests are often seen as more versatile in terms of styling. They can be dressed up or down, worn over dresses, pants, or skirts, and are suitable for various occasions. Gilets, while versatile in their own right, are more commonly associated with casual or active wear.

In summary, while both gilets and long vests are sleeveless outerwear pieces, their differences in length, design, functionality, and versatility make them suitable for different outfits and occasions.

Now let's move on to styling.

A long-line vest is generally artistic in design and associated with free spirits and nonconformity.

Think Boho, beach-loving and lush green hills style, it draws inspiration from various cultures and eras, blending elements such as natural fabrics like cotton and linen, and eclectic accessories like beads, fringes, lots of chunky texture, and even feathers.

It's a relaxed and effortless vibe, used for fascinating layering, with a mix of textures and patterns.

It's a style that values individuality, creativity, and a sense of adventure.

I love a long sleeve shirt under a long line vest. It's seriously my favourite look.

The more detail (think balloon and princess sleeve plus texture) the better.

This makes Layering my vest over my linen set a no-brainer.

Plus unusual denim pieces that seem a little out of the ordinary, look amazing under an artistic long line vest.

Interesting collars get me every time under a long line vest.

Longline vests are quite versatile and will work well with various types of pants depending on the look you're going for.

Here are some options:

  1. Skinny Jeans: These create a sleek and streamlined look, especially when paired with a longline vest that is more fitted or tailored. Think fine knit vest and a more corporate style vest.

  2. Wide-Leg Trousers: For a more relaxed and bohemian vibe, wide-leg trousers are a great choice. They add volume and flow to the outfit, contrasting nicely with the structured silhouette of the vest.

  3. Cropped Pants: If you want to play with proportions, cropped pants are a stylish option. They allow the longline vest to stand out and create a visually interesting silhouette.

  4. Droppies, Denim, Or Faux Leather Pants: If you're going for a casual yet edgy look, droppies, denim or leather pants will complement a longline vest nicely. They add texture and depth to the outfit.

Ultimately, the best pants to wear with a longline vest depend on your personal style, the occasion, and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve.

I like to pull out all of my crazy pants and just go for it!
