How to Wear Espresso Brown: Colours That Make It Work for You

There’s a new colour creeping into wardrobes that I think is going to be very hard to ignore… Espresso.

But here’s the thing I want you to know about trends like this: you don’t need to wear a trend just because it’s trending.

The question I always ask is: “Does this colour work for YOU?”

Because the right colour can make your skin look brighter, your eyes clearer, and your whole wardrobe feel effortless.

The wrong colour can do the exact opposite.

So, what exactly is espresso?

Think of a really good shot of coffee; it's a very deep and rich dark brown and can be an almost-black depth, inspired by roasted coffee beans.

And if you’ve been wearing black for years, this is a beautiful way to swap it out for dark taupe so you suddenly feel like you’re wearing “colour”.

And this is where knowing your skin colour and your own colours becomes incredibly important.

One of my favourite ways for each colour type to wear espresso (or dark taupe):

Hair colour type: Dark taupe with Light grey, Light blue, Periwinkle blue, Soft Pink, Light green, and Sage green.

Eye colour type: Dark taupe with Crisp white, Pastel pink, Turquoise, Dusty blue,  Cobalt blue, Light green, Seafoam, Emerald green, and Burgundy.

Vibrant colour type: Dark taupe with Ivory, Periwinkle blue, Light blue, Dusty blue, Deep peach, Pastel pink, Strawberry, Bright red, Violet, Light green, Seafoam, and Chartreuse.

Creative colour type: Dark taupe with Vanilla cream, Gold, Periwinkle blue, Turquoise, Teal, Deep peach, Yellow green, Emerald green, and Chartreuse.

Just because a colour is having a moment doesn't mean you should automatically put it next to your face.

And this is one of my favourite styling tricks:

You don't have to give up a colour just because it isn't your best colour.

You simply need to know where to put it. Start Small.

If you're not convinced about espresso yet, don't go out and buy an entire espresso wardrobe.

Start with one piece. Perhaps: An espresso belt. A handbag. A pair of loafers. A beautiful pair of trousers. A cute skirt.

Then bring it into your existing wardrobe and see what happens. Because the goal isn't to constantly buy the latest trend.

The goal is to build a wardrobe that works.

A wardrobe where you can open the doors, pull out a few pieces, and know exactly how to put them together.

That's when getting dressed really does become easy. And that, my Boss babe, is exactly what I want for you.

Will espresso suit your personality and mood too?

Try it with:

Burgundy or Dark pink for a rich, sophisticated combination.

Soft pink or Pastel pink if you want to create something feminine and pretty.

Sage green or Moss green for a more earthy, relaxed look.

Cobalt or Royal blue if you want contrast and energy.

Turquoise or teal if you want the espresso to become the grounding colour.

Because when you know your colours, your personality, your proportions and your outfit formulas… you don't follow fashion.

You make fashion work for you.
